Abstract

The study assessed the Strategies for Motivating Students in Online Learning Environments in Tertiary Institutions in Imo State. The researchers posed two research questions which guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The design is appropriate owing to the fact that the researchers aimed at explaining the strategies that motivate students in online learning as well as pointing out challenges that may hinder students in online learning environment and solution. Therefore, collection and analysis of data through survey method becomes pertinent and paramount. Students of tertiary institutions in Imo State formed the population of the study and sample of 94 students from three selected tertiary institutions form the sample. Data was collected with a researcher made questionnaire of 25 items titled; Strategies for Motivating Students in Online Learning Environments Questionnaire (SMSOLEQ). The questionnaire instrument yielded a reliability index of 0.82 using cronbachs alpha method. That was analyzed with means and standard deviation. Each item of the questionnaire with mean above 2.50 was accepted, otherwise was rejected. SPSS Package 24 was used for the analysis. The study revealed some of the effective motivational strategies used in online learning environments in tertiary institutions. Also, it revealed some challenges students face in maintaining motivation in an online learning environment, and the solutions that can address these challenges. Based on the findings and among other recommendations, the government should allocate funds to enhance the digital infrastructure across the country, ensuring reliable internet access.
