Impact of Hardware-based Digital Microteaching Practicum on Pre-Service Teachers’ Acquisition of Teaching Skills and Retention

Abstract

The study examined the impact of hardware-based digital microteaching practicum on pre-service teachers’ acquisition of teaching skills and retention for sustainable teacher education development in Nigeria. The study was a quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest non-randomized control group, where the researchers had no control over the variables. The sample size for the study consists of 60 (19 males and 41females) 2022/2023 UTME Biology and Chemistry 300 level degree students. Four research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. Five experts validated the instrument (two drawn from the Measurement and Evaluation and three from Educational Technology units) Faculty of Education, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education (AIFUE) Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. The experts checked and confirmed the correctness and appropriateness of the content, relevance and coverage of the instrument. Inter-rater reliability of the RMQMAT was established as 0.79, using the Fleiss (1989) Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) formulae. The reliability for PLIHDMPR was also 0.83, using the computer software SPSS employing Spearman-Brown method of computing reliability. Hence, these reliability indices were considered good for the study. The data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, t-test and ANCOVA. The result revealed that the pre-service teachers exposed to hardware-based digital microteaching practicum performed better both in teaching skills acquisition and retention during teaching practice exercise in the classroom,  than those exposed to microteaching practicum without hardware. Recommendations were made among others; that pre-service teachers should be thoroughly exposed to hardware based digital microteaching practicum before their posting to practicing teaching in the classroom, for sustainable development.
