Abstract
The study is a descriptive survey research which sought to explore the impact of Innovation Labs in fostering creative work engagement and innovation among students of secondary school students in Njaba LGA of Imo State. The population of the study was made up of all the teachers in the secondary schools in the LGA totalling 1,860. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to draw a sample size of 224 teachers as respondents. Four Research Questions guided the study. The instrument used for data collection was a Questionnaire titled ‘impact of Innovation Labs in fostering creativity and innovative skills among secondary school students. The instrument was structured in line with the Research Questions and was validated by three experts in Educational measurement and Evaluation from Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri. The test re-test reliability co-efficient stood at 0.89 using the Cronbach alpha method. The mean statistic was used for data analyses. The findings of the study showed that, there are areas provided as Innovation Labs in the schools; Innovation Labs impact tremendously on the students’ creative and innovative engagements especially in problem solving, cross fertilization of ideas as well as enthusiasm to learn; The findings also revealed inadequacies in the provision of technological tools and materials as well as retinue of possibilities to improve the implementation of Innovation Labs in the schools. It was recommended that teachers should live up to their responsibilities in fostering creative and innovative skills of students; adequate technological tools and materials should be provided to fix the Innovation Labs while teachers should be subjected to workshops and seminars on proper implementation of Innovation Labs in schools.
