Unshackling the Future: Overcoming Historical Limitations in Nigeria’s Education System

Abstract
Nigeria’s education system has been shaped by a complex interplay of historical, cultural, and socio-economic factors, resulting in persistent challenges that hinder its development. This study critically examines the historical limitations that have impacted Nigeria’s education system, including the legacy of colonialism, inadequate funding, and poor infrastructure. The research aims to identify the historical roots of these challenges and explore strategies for overcoming them, with a focus on promoting inclusive, quality education for all Nigerians. A qualitative approach was employed, analyzing historical documents, academic literature, and stakeholder perspectives to understand the complexities of Nigeria’s education system. The study reveals that Nigeria’s education system is still grappling with the consequences of historical limitations, including inadequate infrastructure, poor teacher quality, and inequitable access to education. However, the research also highlights opportunities for reform and innovation, including the potential for technology-enhanced learning, community-based initiatives, and contextually relevant curricula. Based on the findings, the study recommends that policymakers prioritize contextually relevant education policies, increase funding for education, and promote inclusive and equitable access to quality education for all Nigerians.
